Came from this
It has come out of the BA2 option on gesture / interaction, in
particular: explored group interaction and the relationships between
acoustic instrument performance and digital interfaces
It is built on a technical infrastructure - which involves the use of
text as a mediating and controlling medium. (called a 'name space')
which can be sent wirelessly between computers, linking and connecting
remote objects.

Will be like this
the final shape is not yet decided, but certain key features have been.

there will be 5 groups (islands) of performers, each group will have a
single loudspeaker. The groups will be of 2, 3 or 1 person.
The groups will be arranged about the space, near enough to have visual
and audible contact with each other.
Each group has a single laptop that is in communication with the others
using a wireless airport connection.

Data is is sent to all the islands simultaneously - this data is
interpreted separately and independently by each group using programs
and sounds that they have developed.

the data comes from several sources
1. Performance data from a live musician (analysis of pitch, attack
transients and movement) It would be great if this was Sinfonietta
musician

2. Video analysis of a live image (either shadows of people on a wall or
screen, illuminated paint expanding in water 60's style, lights shining
on a wall- to be decided)

2. A steady pulse (this can be fractionated)

3. A more random pulse (derived either from remote sensing, or from
statistical data like the annual water heights in the Venice lagoon, or
some sensitive time varying environmental data)

Influenced by this

to draw on Nono and his own work (particularly ideas to do with
historical continuity v 'cut and splice')

to look at the political process in the improvisation, ie to see how
agreement, control and diversity are negotiated (also in regard to the
messages sent through the network and their interpretation)

Each member of the class is developing ideas - some of which will be
visible on the blog.

We will aim to find some simple sonic themes that will allow a degree of
unity in the final piece - certainly using vocal material, but probably
other as well.
